Congresswoman Fudge Comments on Disclose Act

Statement

Date: June 24, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement on the DISCLOSE Act, after she voted against the measure on the House floor:

"I believe Americans deserve to know who funds political ads, which is the underlying premise of the DISCLOSE Act. The Act's fundamental principle is that no entity should be able to anonymously use corporate funds in political campaigns. It also establishes that CEOs must stand by their ads, just as candidates are required to do.

"While the DISCLOSE Act is successful in part, it does not hold every organization accountable. The DISCLOSE Act grants an exception to the National Rifle Association and a few other possible organizations, which is unfair and unconstitutional. Congress should ensure that no single special interest group is allowed to use its power and money to influence America's elections. Therefore, I cannot support this measure in its present form."
