Fleming Votes Against Cybersecurity Bills For Not Protecting Personal Freedoms

Statement

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after voting against H.R. 1560, the Protecting Cyber Networks Act and H.R. 1731, the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act:

"While I believe we need to do more to combat cyber attacks, it can't be at the expense of our privacy and civil liberties. These bills allow companies to share individual's private information with the government in the hopes of identifying or preventing a cyber attack. However, if the scandals at the NSA and IRS have taught us anything -- it's that the government already has too much access to our personal information.

The Constitutional freedoms of Americans must be protected at all times, even during cybersecurity breaches. I will continue to oppose legislation that doesn't protect these personal freedoms."
