United States Representative Todd Rokita (R-Indiana) was in Frankfort Friday to address a meeting of the Frankfort Rotary Club at Blueberry Hill Restaurant.

Rokita, who said he has visited all 92 counties in Indiana every year since he was the Indiana Secretary of State from 2003 to 2011, had some glowing comments about the City of Frankfort.

"Indiana has a lot of bright spots," said Rokita. "I will honestly tell you though that this community with this kind of good local leadership has a sense of community because they care for each other. This is probably the brightest of the bright spots."

Rokita added cities such as Frankfort may become where the nation looks at to help solve future problems.

"We have a good cross section of industry here," said Rokita. "We have good local community and non-profit organizations that want to take care of each other instead of letting the federal government do it and being dependent on it. I think that's the key to America's success in the 21st Century. I don't think this community looks to Washington to solve its problems. In fact, I think the nation is going to look to communities and states like this in order to see which direction we go in the 21st Century."

When U.S. Senator Dan Coats (R-Indiana) announced his retirement, Rokita's name was mentioned as a possible candidate.

Asked where that situation stood, Rokita replied, "We're deliberating very intently on that and you should see a decision from my wife, me and my team by mid-June."

Rokita also spent time going over the financial crisis that this country is in. He said the U.S. had $3 trillion, but owes $500 billion. He added the United States is still the world's reserve currency. However, he said we can't afford to lose that title.

Rokita said the best way to get this country moving forward is to elect people that are willing to make the hard decisions regardless if they are popular are not. He said regardless if individuals are elected or not, all of us have to take responsibility for what's going on in this country.

Rokita said he enjoys his visits to Frankfort and is hoping that he and his family will be back in the community for the Hot Dog Festival on July 24 and 25.
