Congressman Veasey Statement on Same-Sex Marriage Decision

Statement

Date: June 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled that state marriage bans are unconstitutional:

"I applaud the Supreme Court on their historic ruling today on same-sex marriage. The law of the land agrees with what the majority of Americans already know--when it comes to marriage, all that matters is love, not your sexual orientation. The Court has spoken and state laws banning same sex couples from marrying are now unconstitutional.

Couples like Bill Reyno and Chris Walters, who live in the district I represent and who have been together for more than six years, now have the right to pass along their inheritance, collect Social Security benefits, and can now simply visit each other in the hospital, should one of them get sick. Dallas County is ready and prepared to issue marriage licenses to couples like Bill and Chris and soon many other counties in Texas will follow.

I am proud to serve as a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus that, in partnership with many others, has worked so hard to achieve this victory today. Though the fight for full LGBT equality in this country is far from over, today we celebrate that we are one giant step closer. Because love is love."
