Bennet Commemorates 150th Anniversary of Sand Creek Massacre

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement regarding the 150th Anniversary of the Sand Creek Massacre:

"The Sand Creek Massacre represents a dark and shameful moment in the nation's history. The 150th anniversary is not only a good time to remember those that were lost that day, but also a time to rededicate our energy towards building a world for the next generation without these acts of senseless and horrifying violence. As we move forward as a community and as Coloradans we must continue looking for ways to honor our unique backgrounds, heritages, and contributions and work together to build a more shared, just future."

Representatives from Bennet's office attended a ceremony at the state capital today and attended a commemoration ceremony at the Sand Creek Massacre Historical Site to present a letter to those in attendance, along with the Indian Tribes, last Saturday on the 150th Anniversary, November 29th. Bennet also sponsored legislation with Senator Mark Udall to authorize the Secretary of Interior to make improvements at the Sand Creek Massacre visitor center located in Eads, Colorado.
