Lujan Grisham Releases Statement Recognizing Native American Heritage Month

Statement

Date: Nov. 18, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, US Rep Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement in recognition of National Native American Heritage Month:

"During the month of November, our nation comes together to celebrate Native American Heritage Month in order to honor the legacy and contributions of the First Americans. New Mexico is fortunate to be home to 19 Pueblos, two Apache tribes and the Navajo Nation, which have all profoundly influenced the state's culture and traditions, making it the "Land of Enchantment.'

"Elected officials and community leaders must remain committed to preserving Native American traditions, language and culture as well as respecting the sovereignty of tribal nations. The strength and resiliency of Native American communities reflects the strength of the country as a whole.

"In Congress, I've worked with the Pueblo of Sandia and the Pueblo of Tesuque on legislation that affirms my commitment to tribal nations. Whether it is ensuring that sacred lands are restored to tribal control or preserving cultural and traditional methods of food harvesting and storage, my commitment to tribes is unwavering. I will continue to advocate for tribes in New Mexico and throughout the country.

"As we commemorate Native American Heritage Month and celebrate November 28, 2014 as Native American Heritage Day, we must continue to fight for a better future for Native Americans and all Americans. I look forward to celebrating Native American Heritage Month and continuing to forge stronger government-to-government relationships with tribal nations. I hope you will join me."
