Labrador Praises Passage of Legislation to Curb EPA Overreach

Press Release

Date: Sept. 9, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID) lauded passage of H.R. 5078, the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act, which prevents the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers from expanding their regulatory jurisdiction over waters under the Clean Water Act. Rep. Labrador is a cosponsor of the legislation.

"Today was a positive step forward in limiting overreach by the federal government. I've always advocated for a state's right to regulate waters within its borders and a limited role for the federal government, " said Rep. Labrador. "This legislation moves us closer to achieving this goal."

H.R. 5078 prohibits the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA from implementing a new rule to expand their jurisdiction over state waters under the Clean Water Act. The bill would require these agencies to consult with State and local officials as they develop new regulatory proposals. H.R. 5078 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 262-152 today, and will now be referred to the Senate for consideration.
