Location: Minneapolis, MN
Issues: Transportation

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the Minneapolis City Council voted to approve the Southwest light rail line (SWLRT).

"I want to congratulate and thank the Minneapolis City Council members for making this vote," Rep. Ellison said. "The Southwest light rail will relieve congestion in the Twin Cities and create tens of thousands of new job opportunities. I'm proud that we have been able to come together and approve a project that's good for Minnesota.

"The Southwest line will connect with the METRO Green Line which was opened earlier this year. Once this project is complete, Minnesotans will be able to travel between Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the suburbs of Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, and St. Louis Park on safe, quick, and affordable public transportation. The Southwest line will connect previously disconnected neighborhoods. It will create new jobs. And it will foster economic opportunity for low-income communities.

"This is an ambitious project. I commend the Minneapolis City Council for voting in support of our region's aspirations. As the Southwest light rail line moves closer to reality, we should all reflect on what we can accomplish when we work together."
