Issue Position: Restoring Social Services

Issue Position

Over many years of budget cuts across our Commonwealth, too often our most vulnerable populations have been forced to bear the brunt of cuts. We must restore the support that is necessary for these groups -- seniors, at-risk youth, and low income families -- to be safe and secure in our neighborhoods.

When I was an Assistant District Attorney, I saw first-hand the negative impact of those budget cuts. At-risk youth ended up in trouble with the police instead of receiving the social services that they needed. This pattern will lead to negative long-term consequences for our youth and our society. I will work to restore social programs so that at-risk youth, seniors, and low income families receive the help that they need.

The Department of Mental Health and the Department of Children and Families have faced significant cutbacks in recent years, and one of my top legislative priorities once elected will be to increase funding to programs which aid the most vulnerable among us, in those departments and in others.
