Issue Position: Why is Everyone So Quiet About the Department of Children and Families

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

One of the most pressing -- and sad -- issues facing the State Legislature today and for the coming months is the lack of accountability at the Department of Children and Families. Its seeming lack of organization and oversight has led to the deaths of several children since the beginning of the year. How many more helpless children or dependent families are caught in the chaos that seems to be the hallmark of this State agency?

The agency's caseload continues to grow with not enough supervised staff to support the increased numbers. The actions, or in actions, of the Department of Children and Families touch our community every day. There are many Everett children who are protected and families that are strengthened when this Department functions appropriately. Where is Everett's State Representative? I do not advocate knee-jerk over-reactions to satisfy the public outcry. I encourage and support someone, like myself, who is willing to get involved in developing a plan to review this Department's operations and recommend steps to correct procedures before more innocent children become victims.
