Issue Position: Protecting Oklahoma Consumers

Issue Position

The role of Attorney General brings with it many statutory duties, including protecting Oklahoma consumers from fraud and Oklahoma ratepayers from unreasonable rate increases.

Although I am an Attorney General who is very supportive of business, it should also be known that our state welcomes good actors while punishing the bad ones. I am diligent in protecting the reputation of doing business in Oklahoma and will not hesitate to prosecute those who abuse their position or seek to take advantage of consumers. From unscrupulous home repair scam artists who prey on the elderly to unethical treatment providers who abuse the Medicaid system, I will work to see bad actors held accountable and Oklahoma consumers protected.

When the federal government proposed a 50-state mortgage settlement, I sought to determine what was best for Oklahoma consumers. I was the only Attorney General to not sign the federal settlement. Instead, I did what was in the best interest of Oklahoma consumers and crafted our own settlement. Because of that Oklahomans who have been wronged are receiving on average $11,000 while at the federal level nothing. Additionally as part of the Oklahoma Settlement I have created a partnership with Legal Aid and with the Oklahoma Bar Association to provide legal representation for Oklahomans who are still dealing with the crisis of fighting foreclosure.
