Issue Position: Transparency

Issue Position

Government should be open to the people it represents. We should be able to see where our taxpayer dollars are being spent. Not only is that simply the right thing to do because we are funding that government, but it leaves open the opportunity for someone of more expertise to speak on an issue. In 2007 with the encouragement of activists like myself and the some of the board members, the Brighton Township Board put their checkbook online. The first local government in Michigan and one of the first local governments in the country, the BT board voted to require as policy that their spending be transparent. This shows how successful local residents can be when they work to bring transparency and accountability to government. Other local municipalities and school districts soon voted to do the same thing with their books. How our tax dollars are spent should be available to all, whether at your school, local government, state, or federal level.
