Our road infrastructure desperately needs to be a priority. Government is responsible to make certain that our assets are well maintained. We pay 19 cents per gallon as a wholesale tax at the pump that is directed to transportation funding. Not all of that is currently directed to road maintenance and repair, but it should be. We also pay sales tax of 6% at the pump as well as an additional 18 cents per gallon in federal tax. With gas a $3.75/gallon, we're paying over $.60/gallon in tax, $.40/gallon to Michigan. It isn't that we're not paying enough tax, it is that we're not applying enough to our roads. After determining what our costs are to build roads to a high standard and requiring a warranty, we need to allocate that money to ensure our roads are safe, well built and well maintained.
