Representative Jared Polis (CO-02) today congratulated the University of Colorado-Boulder and project director J. Andrew Cowell on their receipt of a $172,290 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to document the endangered Arapaho language in a database and dictionary.

"Preserving historically important languages, such as Arapaho, is critical to honoring the Native American heritage and spirit that is present throughout Colorado," said Representative Polis. "The Arapaho Project at CU has done a tremendous job documenting the many customs and traditions of a tribe that was one of the largest in the State, and these funds will help ensure that this work honoring the Arapaho's will be able to continue."

It is estimated that less than 500 people still speak Arapaho, virtually all of whom are over 50. The Arapaho lived throughout eastern and central Colorado, including along the Front Range urban corridor.
