Rep. Ellison Statement on President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans

Statement

Date: Jan. 17, 2014
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Issues: Education

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after President Obama announced the creation of the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans, which will focus on improving educational outcomes for African American students:

"African American students have the same talent and determination as kids in other communities, but attend college at a much lower rate than the average American student. Minneapolis Public Schools have made great strides, but in 2012 the rate of African American students graduating from high school in four years in the city was still only 37%. The commission the president created yesterday has the experience and the talent to improve that number. Congratulations to all those appointed to the commission. I look forward to hearing their ideas about closing the achievement gap."
