Issue Position: Conaway and Singleton Announce State Grant to Help Burlington Non-profit Continue Mission to Serve at Risk Youth

Assemblymen Herb Conaway, Jr. M.D. and Troy Singleton (both D-Burlington) on Monday announced a Small Cities Grant from the State Division of Housing and Community Resources to help renovate a Burlington City community center that provides extensive help to at-risk youths.

"For over 15 years, SisterHood has done great work to help many young people avoid the perils of youth and become productive members of society," said Conaway. "In a difficult economy such as this, many non-profits have struggled to do more with less so this grant is certainly welcome to help them continue fighting the good fight."

"This grant will go a long way towards helping SisterHood continue its mission of serving at-risk members of our community," said Singleton. "Their mission is a noble one and I'm pleased that the state has recognized this and is willing to provide the funding to help support their cause."

The grant, in the amount of $400,000, will be used to renovate SisterHood Community Services Center on East Broad Street in Burlington City. The renovation work will include improvements to the roof, HVAC, electrical, lighting, restrooms, flooring, ceilings and miscellaneous other building systems.

SisterHood is a non-profit organization that offers a wide-range of counseling, seminars and training for at-risk youths to help prevent them from falling victim to substance abuse, violence, early drop-out, low self-esteem, and teenage parenting.
