Lujan Grisham Statement on New Mexico Same-Sex Marriage Decision

Statement

Date: Aug. 26, 2013
Location: Albuquerque, NM

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), a former Bernalillo County Commissioner, released the following statement after New Mexico District Judge Alan Malott ruled that clerks in Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties must issue marriage licenses to all couples who otherwise meet the requirements of marriage "without regard to the couples' sexual orientation or gender":

"I am thrilled that same-sex couples in Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties can now affirm their love and commitment for each other through marriage. On this historic day, I would like to congratulate all of the same-sex couples in New Mexico who can now enjoy the same rights and protections of any legally-recognized marriage. Many of these couples have been waiting decades for this day, and I am incredibly happy for them.

"While Judge Malott's ruling that the New Mexico Constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is great news, we must not rest until all New Mexicans and all Americans have the opportunity to marry the person they love and have that marriage officially recognized in the eyes of the law."
