Congressman Carney today released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decisions regarding marriage equality and the Defense of Marriage Act:

"Today's Supreme Court decisions mark another critical step in our country's march toward equality.

"Earlier this month, I celebrated 20 years of marriage with my wife, Tracey. Today's decision regarding Proposition 8 will make it possible for more Americans to take part in this institution that celebrates commitment, love, and mutual respect. I'm also pleased that same-sex couples in marriages across the country will now be eligible for the same federal benefits as other married couples.

"I agree with most Americans that the government ought not treat couples differently based on their sexual orientation. Today's decisions affirm that principle."
