Fleming: The Supreme Court Got it Wrong.

Statement

Date: June 26, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Fleming, M.D., spoke at a Capitol Hill press conference and responded to the marriage decisions released today by the U.S. Supreme Court. Video of his remarks can be found here. Rep. Fleming also released the following statement:

"The Supreme Court got it wrong. The same court that used contorted reasoning last year to legitimize the unconstitutional and unpopular Obamacare law, applied equally bad reasoning today to torpedo a federal marriage law that was passed on a bipartisan basis and that clearly reflected the longstanding will of the American people. Marriage between one man and one woman is a fundamental building block of our civilization and it is the ideal model from which we raise our children. Together, mothers and fathers offer the complementary roles which best meet a child's needs and which benefit society. Traditional marriage must be defended, especially as it's been made clear today by the Supreme Court that the states still have the right to uphold marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

Dr. John Fleming is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.
