Issue Position: Protecting Pensions & Nursing Homes

Issue Position

Phil currently assists his own father with his personal affairs and witnessed the difficulties when caring for his grandmother, Fannie Donchin, who died at age 99 living in her own apartment. She was able to do that, in part because of governmental programs that provided aid to facilitate her ability to live as long as possible in her own home. That is why Phil Steck supports both a new, public Nursing Home and shifting significant resources from nursing home care to home healthcare assistance. Home care is far less expensive than nursing home care and conserves taxpayer dollars while keeping loved ones together. Senior Citizens are happier and healthier when they are able to stay at home.

We have to stop "The Race to the Bottom". People who have worked hard their whole lives have earned the right to retire and enjoy the rest of their time in dignity. That means protecting Social Security and public pensions. It also means that we need to strengthen our private pensions. Studies have shown that, even with the best of intentions, middle class employees cannot save enough money in a 401k plan to fund retirement. As an attorney practicing in the field of civil rights & employment law, Phil has observed that, for several decades, union pensions in the private sector, usually in the construction industry, have adequately funded workers' retirement. There is no reason that this model cannot be applied in other industries. Phil will bring his knowledge and experience to State government to fight for workers and retirees.
