Jenkins Ignores Voters in Lansing

Press Release

Date: Oct. 10, 2012
Location: Lansing, KS

Candidate Tobias Schlingensiepen said Wednesday night that his opponent's failure to participate in a voter forum at the Lansing City Hall illustrates the problem with Congress.

"The fact that my opponent, Congresswoman Jenkins, isn't here says something about what she thinks is important," Schlingensiepen told the forum's audience. "She isn't here, so apparently she doesn't think taking your questions is important."

Schlingensiepen said he could tell the voters of Leavenworth County what does matter to the Congresswoman. "The Lawrence Journal-World just reported last week that my opponent holds fundraisers at a swank, member-only club in Washington DC. You and I can't walk into that club and talk to her, but if you're a lobbyist and you pay $500 to $2,500, you can have a long talk with Congresswoman Jenkins."

Schlingensiepen got a laugh from the audience when he answered the first question and then turned to the moderator and asked "Do I rebut myself now?"

That first question, by the way, asked the Congressional candidate about the issues he feels strongly about. "The first cause I feel strongly about is changing the way Washington does business," he said.

"I'm in this race to bring jobs to the 2nd District, to find real, practical solutions to the national debt, and to end deficit spending and fiscal recklessness," Schlingensiepen said. "But I'm also in this race to bring sanity to Congress. It's long past time we took traditional Kansas values to Washington."

The Leavenworth County League of Women Voters and Leavenworth/Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the forum, which also included candidates for state offices and the mayor of Lansing.

Before the forum began, a spokeswoman for the League confirmed that they had contacted the Jenkins campaign to ask Congresswoman Jenkins to attend.

Schlingensiepen is a community leader and pastor in Topeka.
