Today, U.S. Democratic Senate nominee Mazie Hirono received the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). With more than a million members and supporters nationwide, HRC is the nation's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBT Americans.

"I am honored to welcome HRC to our campaign ohana," said Hirono. "My commitment to fighting for equal rights and equal opportunity for all Americans, including our LGBT friends, has guided me throughout my time in public service, and I will continue to advocate for these values in the U.S. Senate."

HRC President Chad Griffin said, "Mazie Hirono is a leader in the fight for equality and exactly who the people of Hawaii need in the U.S. Senate. Mazie supports full marriage equality, while Linda Lingle vetoed a civil unions bill that would have given gay and lesbian couples equal treatment under the law. Mazie has always believed all people should be treated with dignity and respect. She will take that fair-minded belief with her to the halls of the U.S. Senate."

HRC is the latest in a broad and growing coalition to endorse Hirono for U.S. Senate -- a coalition that includes EMILY's List, Hawaii Building and Constructions Trades Council, Hawaii Carpenters Union, Hawaii Government Employees Association, Hawaii Firefighters Association, Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Hawaii State Teachers Association, International Federation Professional & Technical Engineers, League of Conservation Voters, National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare, Planned Parenthood, Seafarers International, and the Sierra Club.
