A casual encounter is what 4th district congressman Todd Rokita wanted for his constituents at his first-ever "Congress on the Corner" meeting.

People of all different backgrounds and political beliefs came to ask Congressman Rokita for support on their issue of choice.

"We asked Congressman Rokita to support House Bill HR 1351 which deals with the postal service funding issue," said William White a resident of Crawfordsville. He said without support for the bill, postal workers will be asked to pre-fund future retirement benefits, which White said no other government agencies has been asked to do.

"He really wasn't aware of it too much. He did say that he would look into," said White.

Others like Patti O'Callaghan said now that Rokita has an office in Lafayette, it's important to let him know the issues the local community cares about, like programs that support the need-based members of the community.

"Programs for poor and hungry people. We believe it's not only the morally correct thing to do, it's the fiscally responsible thing to do," said O'Callaghan.

Congressman Rokita also used the meet and greet to talk about spending policies.

"We have to get this country back to where we're not spending more than what we take in. And it's really simple and a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution would make that happen," said Rokita.
