Press Release

Date: Aug. 29, 2011
Location: San Antonio, TX

Gov. Rick Perry announced Housing4TexasHeroes, a new $3 million grant program to help veterans buy, build, rehabilitate or rent a home. The governor spoke at the Veterans of Foreign Wars 112th National Convention, where he also thanked our nation's veterans for their sacrifices, courage and leadership to protect freedom around the world.

"The freedoms we all enjoy are the direct result of the service and sacrifice of our veterans, who valued their country and their communities, above themselves," Gov. Perry said. "Housing4TexasHeroes will help ensure veterans and their families have adequate housing as they ease back into civilian life and enjoy the blessings of liberty they have earned with their own valor and sacrifice. The men and women of the United States Military are the greatest ambassadors of freedom this nation has ever sent abroad. That's why, when we send them to war, we must give them every weapon and every resource to help them succeed. And when those heroes come home, many physically scarred, others emotionally, we must devote whatever resources are needed to help them heal and live fulfilling lives."

Administered by the Texas Veterans Commission, Housing4TexasHeroes will issue grants to help veterans buy or repair their home, or renovate a home to meet special needs caused by service-related disabilities.

"The sacrifices made by the veterans and their families who will benefit from these housing grants are nothing short of extraordinary," Thomas Palladino, executive director of the Texas Veterans Commission, said.

Gov. Perry is committed to ensuring our service men and women receive the opportunities and benefits they deserve, and appreciates the efforts of leaders, like Sen. Williams and Sen. Van De Putte, who make the welfare of our veterans and service members a top priority. Following the 82nd Legislative Session, Gov. Perry signed legislation establishing the College Credit for Heroes program, helping veterans graduate college more quickly and save money on tuition. He also signed legislation that ensures the votes of active-duty military members overseas will be counted, extends the property tax exemption for fully disabled veterans to their surviving spouse, and ensures the property tax exemption follows disabled veterans to a new property if they move.
