LUCAS STATEMENT ON MARRIAGE AMENDMENT

February 24, 2004

Washington, D.C.- U.S. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas made the following statement in response to President Bush's statement urging Congress to protect the institution of marriage:

"I voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which prevents our state from being forced to legally recognize same-sex marriages of another state. It was signed into law in 1996.

"But liberal judges continue to try to redefine the institution of marriage. In fact, they could even strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.

"If it takes a constitutional amendment to keep the courts from imposing their will on Oklahomans and our values, then I will vote for a constitutional amendment protecting marriage, and will work for its passage."
