Issues: Death Penalty

John Marty has been a consistent opponent of the death penalty. Not only has it been unfairly and discriminatorily applied, but many innocent people have been put to death over the years.

The death penalty does not save money. Due to legal and other costs, Texas and other states spend two to three times more for a prisoner executed than for one locked up for a life sentence. The death penalty does not reduce crime. It does not keep people safer.

While it is essential to punish people for crimes committed, the most responsible and humane approach to crime is to prevent it from happening in the first place. As governor, John will aggressively invest in crime prevention and in keeping dangerous offenders off the street. He will remain an outspoken opponent of capital punishment.
