Moran: Marriage Must be Protected

Statement

Congressman Jerry Moran issued the following statement today in response to a ruling by U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro declaring the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

"Family is the foundational institution of our nation and marriage is its cornerstone. Marriage is, and should only be defined as a union between one man and one woman. I strongly support the Defense of Marriage Act and have voted to amend the U.S. Constitution to protect the institution of marriage," said Moran.

"In spite of the fact that Americans have made it clear they want to preserve marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman, activist judges seem intent upon defining marriage as they see fit. I strongly urge the U.S. Department of Justice to appeal Judge Tauro's ruling so it might be reversed and the institution of marriage protected."

Moran has sponsored two marriage amendments, H. J. Res. 37 and H. J. Res. 50, to amend the U.S. Constitution and define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.
