Governor John E. Baldacci today welcomed the news from Senator Olympia Snowe that she will vote for the health care reform package crafted in the Senate Finance Committee. The Governor issued the following statement upon hearing of the Senator's intentions.

"When the light of history shines on political leaders, they can either move things forward or stand in the way of progress. Senator Snowe has recognized the important opportunity before this country to improve health care for all Americans. She has stepped up to address the challenges that remain ahead, and she is committed to doing the hard work to move forward."

"Senator Snowe is to be commended for her efforts and her commitment to work to solve the challenges ahead. This is not the final word on health care reform, but it allows progress to continue and is therefore a huge step forward."

"Through her efforts to listen, to challenge and to find answers, Senator Snowe has again shown the leadership that Maine people have come to expect from her."
