Sen. Creigh Deeds, the Democratic nominee for governor, released the following statement on Friday, recognizing National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. President Obama declared October 2009 National Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, September 30th.

"Domestic Violence Awareness Month raises critical public awareness about the psychological, physical and economic costs of domestic violence, and encourages support for victims and prevention programs. Every year, far too many Virginians suffer from sexual assault and domestic violence crimes and it's critical that we continue to focus on treating and eventually solving this grave problem that touches so many women, men, and children of every background and circumstance.

"I commend Gov. Kaine for his most recent executive order that establishes a domestic-violence work group that will implement the recommendations of the Governor's Commission on Sexual Violence. His 2006 commission addressed this problem in key areas of criminal justice, treatment, intervention and prevention. As Governor, I look forward to continuing these important efforts."
