Sen. Cornyn Calls President's Decision On Human Stem Cells ‘Ill-Timed And Wrong Direction'

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama's decision to lift the restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research:

"I disagree with both the substance and timing of President Obama's decision to lift the ban on human stem cell research. To use human life to experiment for scientific purposes and ask taxpayers to fund that is the wrong direction. I have supported several alternatives that would use adult and cord blood stem cells for research. These methods have proven to be more productive, and they do not harm or destroy human embryos. President Obama's decision sadly reflects his commitment to pursuing a liberal agenda with regard to life issues. It is also an ill-timed decision when President Obama should be using every opportunity he has to focus his efforts on reviving the nation's economy."

The Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act to aid research into techniques of deriving pluripotent stem cells without harming or destroying human embryos.

The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act establishing a National Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank Network to enable patient match, use and research.
