Feigenholtz Applauds Senate for Passage of the Ledbetter Act
State Representative Sara Feigenholtz, candidate to fill the 5th congressional district seat vacated by Rahm Emanuel, today praised the U.S. Senate for passing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, effectively reversing a Supreme Court ruling that made it more difficult for women to sue for wage discrimination.
The House must approve the measure again because they combined it with another piece of legislation that the Senate did not consider.
President Barack Obama was a vocal supporter of the measure during his 2008 presidential campaign and is expected to sign the bill into law.
"I applaud the [U.S.] Senate for passing this historic bill that will improve the lives of millions of women and families across the country," Feigenholtz said. "During these difficult economic times, when women are leading more households than ever before, this legislation ensures that women and their families will receive the wages they deserve."
Feigenholtz fought to pass Illinois' equal pay for equal work law, which benefits hundreds of thousands of working women today. She urged the U.S. House to move quickly in approving the bill.
"I strongly encourage the House to act without delay in passing this important legislation," she said.
"I am grateful for President Obama's outspoken support for reversing this misguided Supreme Court ruling. The passage of this bill marks a victory for working women and their families and I hope to have the honor of working with Congress and President Obama in the future on similar proposals that will level the playing field and provide greater equity in the workplace."
