Dr. David Orentlicher Announces Comprehensive Health Care Proposal

Press Release

Date: March 17, 2008
Location: Indianapolis, IN

State Representative Dr. David Orentlicher announced today a proposal to guarantee health care coverage for all Americans.

"As a doctor, I have seen first-hand the pain of families—and businesses—that face rising health care costs, and I will go to Washington to make sure that everyone has access to affordable health care. This issue is so vital that last week I pledged not to accept a pay raise until universal health care is addressed by Congress and the President," Orentlicher said.

Orentlicher went on to lay out some of the issues that must be addressed:

Access to affordable care- Our health care system must be open for everyone and allow physicians to meet their obligations to treat all who need care, a system that would essentially be like Medicare for everyone. All Americans would have insurance coverage from the United States government. This would be a public-private partnership: the federal government would pay the bills while physicians operate independently.

High quality care- We must change our payment system to reward doctors for providing the right kind of care. That means rewarding them for preventing disease as well as treating it. By tying payment to performance, we can encourage higher quality, lower cost care.

Encourage competition and innovation- Under Medicare, seniors can choose the traditional coverage, or opt for coverage from private plans. Medicare for everyone should do the same.

David Orentlicher lives on the Northside of Indianapolis with wife Judy and children Cy (7) and Shayna (4) and he has represented the 86th district since 2002.
