Smith Receives Call from Space Station

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) yesterday received a phone call from Nebraska-native Clayton Anderson, a NASA astronaut currently serving aboard the International Space Station. Smith, a Member of the House Science and Technology Committee which has jurisdiction over NASA, is currently in Nebraska for the August district work period.

"It was truly an honor and a once in a life-time experience to be able to have a conversation with someone in space. Nebraskans should be proud of Clayton and all he has accomplished. He is a shining example of striving to be the best and reaching one's potential," Smith said.

Anderson is assigned as a flight engineer and will remain on the Space Station for another four months. He was born in Omaha and graduated from Hastings College with a degree in Physics.

During the call Anderson and Smith discussed Anderson's mission goals and progress so far, as well as a broader conversation about the accomplishments of the space program and the impact its research has had on our economy and our country as a whole. Anderson has been contacting members of Nebraska's Congressional delegation while onboard the space station.
