CONGRESSMAN SARBANES SUPPORTS STEM CELL RESEARCH

President Bush today vetoed a long anticipated bi-partisan bill that 72% of Americans support and would federally fund stem cell research. S. 5 was passed by the Senate on April 11, by a vote of 63 to 34 and passed by the House on June 7th by 247-176.

Congressman John P. Sarbanes (MD-03), who voted in support of S.5, said "It is astounding that the President would use the power of the pen to dash the hopes and dreams of millions of Americans who would benefit from this life saving research. It is clear that in the face of broad bi-partisan support, the President continues to inflict his personal views on the greater American public. It's not right and my thoughts are with the families who will continue to wait."

The bill is supported by more than 500 organizations, including the American Medical Association, AARP, Association of American Medical Colleges, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as well as many faith-based groups.

The bill passed the Congress in the 109th Congress, but unfortunately was vetoed by President Bush in July 2006.
