Walz Votes for Afghanistan Freedom and Security Support Act of 2007

Today, Rep. Tim Walz joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues in passing H.R. 2446, the Afghanistan Freedom and Security Support Act of 2007. H.R. 2446 reaffirms the long-term commitment on the part of the United States to supporting Afghanistan in its transition from 30 years of civil war to a stable, prosperous, democratic state.

"This legislation renews our commitment to Afghanistan while adding provisions to combat new problems. Specifically, H.R. 2446 combats the rampant growth of poppy production, it reaffirms the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, and it makes a substantial commitment to the protection of human rights in Afghanistan," said Walz.

"All too often, we forget that Afghanistan is the real front in the fight against Al Qaeda. If we fail to monitor this situation closely and offer appropriate assistance, we risk losing ground," continued Walz. "I'm pleased that this legislation addresses a comprehensive range of issues from economic assistance to the empowerment of Afghan women. Strengthening the fabric of this new democratic society is crucial to preventing a resurgence of Taliban and al Qaeda activity in the country."
