CARDIN DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED BY PRESIDENT'S DECISION TO VETO STEM CELL RESEARCH BILL

Senator Benjamin L. Cardin today issued the following statement in response to President George W. Bush's veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007:

"Embryonic stem cell research holds the potential to help millions of Americans who have debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and diabetes. I am extremely disappointed that President Bush has chosen once again to veto this bipartisan legislation, leaving millions of Americans without the benefit of potentially life-saving research.

"The President's flawed policy is hindering both scientific research and America's standing as a leader in the fields of science and medicine. S. 5 would enable thousands of American scientists to move forward with promising research projects this year. Unfortunately, because of the President's veto, that will not happen. I will continue to work for enactment of this legislation, which holds out hope for millions of patients suffering from debilitating diseases and injuries."
