Rep. Lamborn Makes Statement on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Congressman Doug Lamborn (Colorado Springs) today issued the following statement on S. 5, a bill which seeks to increase funding for embryonic stem cell research involving the killing of human embryos.

"Despite the fact that adult stem cell research has demonstrated enormous promise and has already been used in the treatment of illnesses such as diabetes, the Democrats, with this bill, insist upon increasing the funding of embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research has received close to $40 million a year in federal funding and shown absolutely no success in the treatment of any disease. Furthermore, this method of research depends upon the destruction of human embryos.

The President has made it clear that he will veto this bill. And the Democrats have made it clear that they would rather spark a contentious political debate than introduce productive legislation providing needed funds for important and groundbreaking medical research.

Unbiased polls show time and time again that the majority of Americans do not support the use of their tax money in funding research practices that involve the destruction of human embryos. Not only do my colleagues across the aisle say that embryonic stem cell research is the key to curing numerous diseases, but they also claim that these cures are right around the corner—both of these assertions are blatantly untrue.

The Democrats continually ignore the actual cures and advancements resulting from adult stem cell research. Their preference for a less successful method of research that relies on taking human embryonic life over a more successful method that relieves human suffering and saves human lives is puzzling.

I am heartened by emerging research demonstrating that medical advancements can be made without compromising our respect for the sanctity of life. My constituents and the American people can trust that I will always vote in favor to protect human life at all stages"
