Statement of U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette on Senate Passage of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act

Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement regarding Senate passage of S. 5, the "Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act."

"I am gratified that the Senate has once again voted to expand embryonic stem cell research. This vote is a victory for the millions of Americans and their families suffering from life threatening diseases like Parkinson's and diabetes. The President must now listen to the will of the Congress and the American public and sign this bill into law.

"I continue to invite the President to sit down with the bipartisan bills sponsors to discuss this legislation and find common ground to allow this research to move forward. It's not too late for the President to change his mind and give hope to the 110 million Americans and their families who would benefit from this life-saving research.

"Stem cell research is far too important for one person to stop. If the President vetoes this bill we will use every legislative vehicle at our disposal to ensure this research is expanded. The President's short-sighted policy will be overturned; it's only a matter of when."
