Officials for the Culinary Workers' Union Local 226 did not back a candidate in the Democratic primary race between Titus and Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson but expressed their intention to endorse the winner.

They made good on that pledge during a special rally with Titus at Cashman Center, where the union is holding its annual Shop Steward Convention.

"I'm very excited about it," Titus said of the union's support. "Culinary's reputation for getting their voters out is renowned."

The 60,000-member union, founded in 1935, makes up almost half of the Nevada AFL-CIO's membership.

"We have a long relationship with Dina," said Pilar Weiss, political director for the union. "She's really stood with workers for a long time."

Weiss said it takes more than party affiliation to win the union's support, as evidenced by Culinary's decision to twice endorse Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn.

"We don't just endorse Democrat or Republican. We endorse the person we think will work best for our members," she said.
