Dina Titus Asks Jim Gibson To Join Her In Opposing Gay Marriage Ban Measure

June 6, 2006

State Senator Dina Titus today called on fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibson to join her in urging Congress to abandon a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

"This measure is a divisive waste of time and nothing but a purely political maneuver by conservatives to drum up votes," Dina Titus said. "I am asking Jim Gibson to add his voice to those of us who believe Congress should be concentrating on more important matters like energy costs, health care, the Iraq war, taxes and controlling the deficit."

The U.S. Senate is scheduled to begin debate this week on a Republican-sponsored constitutional amendment stating: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the Constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."

"Even though Jim Gibson supported the Question 2 same-sex marriage initiative in Nevada in 2000, I am hoping he will join others in Nevada like Senator Harry Reid in condemning this proposal," Dina Titus said. "It has been addressed in Nevada and nearly every other state, and there is no need for a prolonged debate in Congress that only serves the purpose of a few Washington politicians to shore up their conservative political base."

The proposed constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress to pass, and would need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states. All but one of the U.S. Senate's 44 Democrats has announced their opposition to the measure.

"American families are besieged by soaring gas pump prices, health care costs and a deficit that is mortgaging their children's future," Dina Titus said. "Congress needs to focus its attention there, not on political gimmicks. I hope Jim Gibson will join me in sending that message."
