Statements From The Seventh Bipartisan Senate Forum On Artificial Intelligence - Closing

Statement

Date: Nov. 30, 2023
Location: Washington, D.C.

"This concludes a really wonderful and enlightening forum.

Thank you, everyone, for your participation. Thanks to Senators Rounds, Heinrich, and Young. And
thanks to my Senate colleagues and Senate staff in the audience, especially those who stayed with us for the whole afternoon!

This is now our seventh AI Insight Forum, and each time, I have left with a greater understanding of the complexities of AI. Today is no different.

After our discussion, a few things are clear:

First, when it comes to copyright and AI, we must create and enforce protections for creators to maintain their identities in the age of AI, which may include ensuring transparency in AI systems to see what data they are trained on, all while maintaining America's role as the leading innovator of AI.

Second, on intellectual property, there is a role for the federal government to play in protecting
American companies' IP and ensuring that it's America who sets the international standards for IP.

Third, on transparency, we must expand on President Biden's Executive Order to build more robust
disclosure requirements for AI systems to promote safety and security and guard against bias.

Fourth, and finally, on explainability, we must be able to understand why AI systems produce the
answers they do, especially in high-impact areas like finance, health care, and criminal justice. And
companies must lead the way in making their systems more understandable to the public.

As I have said, none of this will be easy. But that has never stopped us before -- America has always
done what is hard.

Today was a good step of progress, but we have a lot of work left ahead of us. I encourage you all to
stay engaged as we continue our work to develop comprehensive AI legislation.

Thank you all again for being here, and I look forward to working with you all in the months ahead."
