Chairman Menendez Applauds Historic Move to Provide Taiwan with Foreign Military Financing

Press Release

Date: Aug. 31, 2023
Location: Washington, DC

"I applaud the Biden Administration's decision to formally notify Congress of its intent to provide Taiwan with FMF for the first time in our nation's history. In the face of increasingly aggressive People's Republic of China military actions in the Strait, the United States must move quickly to provide support for Taiwan's defense. This is why I led passage of the Taiwan Enhanced Resilience Act in last year's NDAA, which authorized up to $10 billion over five years in FMF. While this week's announced $80 million in FMF is just a start, it will make a meaningful contribution in conjunction with the July $345 million Presidential Drawdown Authority funding for Taiwan. Congress has pressed the Biden Administration to rapidly increase our security assistance to Taipei, and I look forward to continuing to support the Administration in its efforts to do so."
