House Republicans Unable to Pass Harmful Agriculture Funding Bill

Statement

"Despite setting a low bar for themselves this week to pass only two of their twelve dangerous funding bills, Republicans could not rally their party's support for an Agriculture, Rural Development, and FDA funding bill filled with extreme and dangerous cuts, because it was not extreme and dangerous enough. Apparently--for House Republicans--it did not take enough food out of the mouths of women and children, it did not prevent enough farmers from buying homes and accessing clean water, it did not prevent enough rural homes from accessing the internet, it did not prevent enough women from accessing an abortion, and it did not protect enough billionaires and corporations from paying their taxes.

The budget agreement negotiated by the Speaker and the President set spending levels into law. Instead of following that law, House Republicans spent the last three months introducing and marking up 2024 funding bills that further their goal of making abortion illegal nationally, eliminating public education and undermining America as a land of opportunity, defunding the police and the FBI, making sure billionaires and tax cheats escape paying taxes, disarming America in the face of the climate crisis, and weakening rural communities.

House Republicans have walked away from the budget agreement and brought our chamber to a halt because of their inability to govern. This week makes clear that House Republicans will need to work with House Democrats if they ever want to get final bills signed into law--they cannot count on their own members alone. House Democrats are ready to get to work and fund the services and programs that American families and rural communities depend on.

The American people are living paycheck to paycheck, and House Republicans do not have a plan. They do not have a strategy. This chaos and confusion comes at a cost -- a government shutdown that the American people cannot afford."
