Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement one year after the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

One year ago, 19 children and two teachers were massacred in their classrooms in one of the deadliest school shootings in our nation's history. These children had their lives stolen by an 18-year-old who should never have had access to a weapon of war. Today, I join my colleagues in praying for the families of the victims and the entire Uvalde community as they continue to mourn this unimaginable loss.

That tragic day at Robb Elementary shocked the conscience of our nation and led to federal action on gun violence for the first time in three decades. The legislation we passed last year will save lives, but it was only a positive step in the right direction. More must be done.

House Democrats will continue to fight for commonsense gun safety legislation, like universal criminal background checks and an assault weapons ban. Extreme MAGA Republicans have shown that they are willing to flood our communities with weapons of war that have been consistently used to shred innocent children, including in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this year. The gun violence epidemic is unacceptable, unconscionable and un-American.

May God bless the Uvalde community and every community that has felt the pain of gun violence in America.
