Durbin Discusses Train Derailments And Union Agreements With CSC CEO

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today met with Joe Hinrichs, CEO of CSX Transportation, to discuss the recent derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, and preventing future hazardous derailments. Durbin heard from Hinrichs about what additional safety measures could be implemented to alert conductors of potential malfunctions.

The meeting concluded with Durbin and Hinrichs discussing the need to support improved working conditions for rail employees. Congress approved a rail labor agreement in December that provided rail workers with the largest wage increase in 50 years. Following this, in February, CSX announced agreements with four labor unions to provide its workers with paid sick leave.

"The rail industry keeps our economy running. While we rely on rail transportation and shipments, we must make it a priority to improve railway safety for the sake of rail workers and communities like East Palestine," said Durbin. "In my conversation with CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs today, I urged him to ensure his company examines its safety practices and continues to support its workers."
