Wyden Statement on House Republican Tax Cheating Bill

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., issued the following statement on the House Republican bill rescinding the IRS funding Democrats passed in the Inflation Reduction Act to crack down on tax cheating by the wealthy and corporations:

"Now that the speakership is settled, the House is proving that there's nothing more unifying to Republicans than giving a huge, deficit-exploding handout to wealthy tax cheats.

"A decade of Republican budget cuts gutted the IRS's ability to crack down on cheating by wealthy individuals and big corporations, and it hobbled customer service for the vast majority of families and small businesses who follow the law. That's what Democrats sought to fix with the additional funding for the IRS.

"If corporations and the rich paid a fair share, or even simply paid all the taxes they legally owe, we could shore up Medicare and Social Security, build more affordable housing, and make our schools and communities stronger nationwide. Republicans don't want their wealthy donors to have to pitch in for any of that. They want the cheating at the top to continue, and that's why they've lied about what the IRS funding is for and are fighting to repeal it.

"The only way that House Republicans could make it any more obvious that they're doing a favor for wealthy tax cheats is by coming out and saying it in exactly those words. This bill is going nowhere in the Senate."
