Rep. Stansbury Votes to Adopt Tentative Agreement, Sick Leave for Rail Workers

Press Release

Date: Nov. 30, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Labor Unions

Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) voted to pass a deal to advance rail worker protections and prevent a nationwide strike, including two resolutions that would adopt a Tentative Agreement and require seven days of paid sick leave for rail workers:

"As the daughter of a union strong family, I know that workers built this country and are the backbone of our economy. After extensive consultation with local and national rail workers and labor organizations, I was proud to advance legislation to protect rail worker benefits and help prevent a national strike. This deal and Tentative Agreement in the House will help protect our workers and keep rail freight moving during this critical time.

"For nearly a year, my office has engaged with our nation's railroad unions as they negotiated on behalf of thousands of workers across New Mexico and the country. Today's agreement in the House is the result of tireless negotiations by workers, labor leaders, and national leadership. It will raise pay and help bring critical protections for workers and represents the first contract that railroad workers have operated under in three years. But, today's vote is only a first step. We will continue to consult and work alongside our railroad workers as we continue the fight for just wages and working conditions for all workers across America and New Mexico's First Congressional District."
