Sherrill Again Votes to Codify Same-Sex and Interracial Marriage

Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted again for the Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect same-sex and interracial marriage. This bipartisan legislation protects the right to marriage equality in federal law by repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and bolstering protections for married same-sex and interracial couples nationwide.

"I am very proud to stand with Americans across the country and vote to defend marriage equality," said Rep. Sherrill. "However, I am shocked that we had to vote for rights that are so intrinsic to who we are as a nation and as individuals. Unfortunately, extremist Republicans in Congress tried to take down the bill at the last minute. Make no mistake, regardless of who is in the majority, I will continue to fight for the safety, dignity, and rights of all Americans."

Following the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade, right-wing extremists are targeting other rulings that uphold basic rights and freedoms. In his concurrence with Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas wrote
that the Supreme Court should also examine previous rulings that legalized the right for married couples to buy contraception without government restriction (Griswold v. Connecticut), same-sex relationships (Lawrence v. Texas) and marriage equality (Obergefell v. Hodges).
