Congressman Joe Morelle Acts to Protect Marriage Equality

Press Release

Date: Dec. 8, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Joe Morelle voted to safeguard the future of marriage equality across America. The Respect for Marriage Act ensures the right of all couples to marry whomever they love, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, is enshrined in federal law and protected against any future attacks by the United States Supreme Court.

"As a country, we have made extraordinary strides in the fight to support and empower our LGBTQ+ community--and we won't be forced backwards by those who seek to dismantle our progress," said Congressman Joe Morelle. "It's shameful that the Supreme Court continues to attack the fundamental rights we hold dear. I'm proud that today, we took decisive action to protect marriage equality and make clear that love is love. I look forward to seeing the President swiftly sign this bill into law."

While marriage equality currently remains a constitutional right, the Supreme Court has demonstrated in their reprehensible decision to overturn Roe v Wade their willingness to reverse years of historical precedent. Justice Thomas's concurrence went so far as to specifically call out other fundamental rights, including the right to marriage equality, as targets for future reversals. By passing the Respect for Marriage Act, Congress has taken preventative steps to protect marriage equality, regardless of any future decisions by the Supreme Court.
