Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Yesterday,U.S. District Judge William Osteen reinstated an unenforced 1973 state law that established a 20-week abortion ban in North Carolina. The ruling comes in the wake of the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization; Osteen originally enjoined the 20-week ban in 2019. Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) issued the following statement on the ruling:

"North Carolina women deserve equal rights and equitable treatment, including the right to bodily autonomy and the right to make personal, private health care decisions. Women who are experiencing medical issues in pregnancy should not have to wait until they become a life-threatening emergency to receive care," said Congresswoman Adams. "In Congress, I proudly supported and voted for legislation like the Women's Health Protection Act which aims to codify reproductive freedom in federal law. I will continue to work to protect abortion providers and support patients and organizers, so no one in North Carolina or across the country is denied health care."
